Faculty Advisor

Dr. James M. Manimala is currently assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and faculty director of SSDL since 2014. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004 from the University of Kerala, India and his MS and PhD degrees from the School of Aeronautics & Astronautics Engineering at Purdue University, Indiana in 2010 and 2014 respectively. Over more than ten years, he has contributed to several projects in industry and academia. His industry experience includes stress analysis of primary structures for large commercial aircraft. He has contributed to research programs funded by several agencies including ARO, AFOSR, DARPA, DTRA and NASA. Dr. Manimala developed a failure prediction model for Kevlar fabrics as part of an ARO project. For an AFOSR program, he demonstrated proof-of-concept for multifunctional acoustic metamaterials. As part of the DARPA Structural-Logic program, he designed and tested negative effective-mass structures. He has received grants to investigate metamaterials-inspired aero-structures and acoustic liner composites in collaboration with NASA. Dr. Manimala received a 2016 DARPA Young Faculty Award to investigate metamaterials-inspired MEMS devices. His current research interests are in structural dynamics and acoustics, mechanical metamaterials, MEMS for controlled acoustics, and adaptive and multifunctional structures.
